Understanding Time#

Time moves forward — it never stops and it never gös backward. Every second that passes becomes the past, and every second ahead of us is the future. Understanding time helps us organise our lives, plan ahead, and make sense of history.

Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow#

Three very important time words are:

  • Yesterday — the day that has already passed (the day before today)
  • Today — right now, the current day
  • Tomorrow — the day that is coming next (the day after today)

Example:

  • Yesterday I went to the park.
  • Today I am at school.
  • Tomorrow I will have swimming lessons.

These words help us talk about time in the simplest way.

The Past, Present, and Future#

Time has three big sections:

  • The Past — everything that has already happened, from yesterday to thousands of years ago
  • The Present — what is happening right now, this very moment
  • The Future — everything that has not happened yet — tomorrow, next week, next year, or far ahead

History is the study of the past! By learning what happened before, we can understand how the world became the way it is today.

How We Measure Time#

People invented ways to measure time so we could organise our lives:

  • Seconds and minutes — for very short amounts of time
  • Hours — a day is divided into 24 hours
  • Days — from one midnight to the next midnight
  • Weeks — 7 days
  • Months — about 30 or 31 days (28 or 29 in February)
  • Years — 365 days (366 in a leap year)
  • Decades — 10 years
  • Centuries — 100 years

A clock measures hours, minutes, and seconds. A calendar shows days, weeks, and months. These are important tools for organising our time!
