Farben — Colors in German!#

The world is full of beautiful colors, and in German, colors are called Farben (say it like: FAR-ben). Learning color words is one of the most fun parts of learning a new language, because you can practice them everywhere you go — just look around!

The Primary Colors#

Let's start with the three most important colors:

GermanPronunciationEnglish
rotROHTred
blauBLAWblue
gelbGELPyellow

Rot is easy to remember — think of a red robot: ROT-bot! Blau sounds almost like "blow" — imagine blowing on a blue flame. Gelb rhymes with "help" — a yellow sun can help you see!

Green and Orange#

GermanPronunciationEnglish
grünGROONgreen
orangeoh-RAHN-zhehorange

Grün is like "green" but with a German twist — the lips round out. Orange looks almost the same as in English — Germans use this word too! The pronunciation is just a little different.

White and Black#

GermanPronunciationEnglish
weissVYESwhite
schwarzSHVARTSblack

Weiss sounds like "vice" — think of white ice! Schwarz sounds like "shvartz" — it is a fun word to say. Try it!

Look Around!#

Now look around your room. Can you name any colors in German?

  • Is there something rot (red)?
  • Something blau (blue)?
  • Something gelb (yellow)?

Practicing with real objects is the best way to remember new words. Every time you see a color, try to think of its German name. You will be a color expert in no time — Toll gemacht! (Great job!)
