Essen — Food in German!#

Food is one of the most important topics in any language, and in German, food is called Essen (say it like: ES-sen). German children eat many of the same foods as you do, but they use different words for them! Let's learn some delicious German food vocabulary.

Bread and Dairy#

GermanPronunciationEnglish
das Brotdas BROHTbread
die Milchdee MILKHmilk
der Käsedair KAY-zehcheese
die Butterdee BOOT-erbutter
das Eidas EYEegg

Das Brot — German bread is very famous! Germany has hundreds of different types of bread. Das Brot sounds like "broat" — the bread is the star of German meals!

Die Milch sounds a bit like "milk" — that is because they come from the same ancient word root. You can hear the similarity!

Der Käse — German cheese is also famous. Say it: KAY-zeh. Imagine saying "Kay" and then "zeh" — easy!

Fruits and Vegetables#

GermanPronunciationEnglish
der Apfeldair AP-felapple
die Bananedee bah-NAH-nehbanana
die Karottedee kah-ROT-ehcarrot
die Tomatedee toh-MAH-tehtomato

Der Apfel looks like the old English word for apple. In fact, English "apple" and German "Apfel" come from the same ancestor word!

Die Banane sounds almost exactly like "banana" — that one is super easy to remember. Die Tomate is almost like "tomato" too!

At Mealtimes#

German children often say before meals:

  • Guten Appetit! (say it like: GOO-ten ah-peh-TEET) — This means "Enjoy your meal!" or "Bon appetit!"

Everyone at the table says this together before eating. It is a lovely German tradition!
