Types of Weather#

Weather is what the outside air is like each day. Is it warm and bright? Cold and rainy? Windy and grey? Weather changes from day to day, and sometimes even from hour to hour! Let's learn about the different types of weather.

Sunny Weather#

On a sunny day, the sky is bright blue and you can see the sun shining. The air feels warm. Sunny days are great for playing outside, going to the park, or having a picnic. The sun gives us light and warmth. Plants love sunny weather because they use sunlight to make food.

Cloudy Weather#

On a cloudy day, soft or grey clouds cover all or most of the sky. The sun is hidden behind the clouds. Cloudy days can still be warm, but they feel less bright. Clouds are made of tiny droplets of water floating in the air.

Rainy Weather#

When clouds become very full of water, the water falls as rain. Rain is made of tiny drops of water that fall from clouds. Rainy days make puddles on the ground. Rain is very important — it fills rivers and lakes and waters plants so they can grow. When you go outside in the rain, you need a raincoat and umbrella!

Snowy Weather#

When the air is very cold and it is cloudy, rain can turn into tiny ice crystals called snowflakes. Lots of snowflakes falling together make a snowstorm. Snow covers the ground in a white blanket. You can build snowmen, make snow angels, and go sledding in snowy weather!

Windy Weather#

Wind is moving air. On a windy day, you can feel the air pushing against you. Wind can be gentle, like a soft breeze that cools you on a hot day. Or it can be very strong — strong enough to blow away umbrellas and snap tree branches! Kites fly best on windy days.

Stormy Weather#

Sometimes weather becomes wild! A thunderstorm has heavy rain, bright flashes of lightning, and loud rumbles of thunder. During a storm, it is safest to stay indoors.
