What Are Seasons?#
Have you noticed that the weather changes throughout the year? Some months are warm and sunny. Other months are cold and snowy. Some months have lots of rain and flowers. This happens because the Earth travels around the Sun, and as it dös, different parts of the Earth get more or less sunlight at different times. These changes are called seasons.
There are four seasons:
- Spring — warming up, flowers bloom
- Summer — the warmest time of year
- Autumn (also called Fall) — leaves change color and fall
- Winter — the coldest time of year
Each season lasts for about three months. Together, all four seasons make one full year.
Why Do We Have Seasons?#
The Earth is slightly tilted as it travels around the Sun. When your part of the Earth is tilted toward the Sun, you get more sunlight and it is summer. When your part is tilted away, you get less sunlight and it is winter. Spring and autumn are the times in between.
This is why, when it is summer in the United Kingdom or northern United States, it is winter in Australia and countries near the South Pole — and vice versa!
How Seasons Affect Daily Life#
Seasons affect everything:
- What we wear (warm coats in winter, cool t-shirts in summer)
- What we eat (strawberries in summer, hot stews in winter)
- What we do for fun (swimming in summer, sledging in winter)
- What plants look like (green leaves in summer, bare branches in winter)
- What animals do (birds migrate in autumn, bears hibernate in winter)
Let's learn about each season in detail!
