Why Do We Have Day and Night?#
Every single day, the sun rises in the morning, travels across the sky, and sets in the evening. Then the sky becomes dark and we have night. Have you ever wondered why this happens? Let's find out!
The Earth Is Spinning!#
The Earth is always spinning, like a giant spinning top. This spin is called rotation. The Earth spins around an imaginary line through its middle called the axis — like a skewer through a ball.
The Earth takes 24 hours (one full day) to make one complete spin. As it spins, different parts of the Earth face the Sun at different times.
Day and Night Explained#
Imagine shining a torch on a spinning globe. The side of the globe that faces the torch is bright — that is day. The side that faces away from the torch is in the dark — that is night.
The Sun shines on one half of the Earth at a time. While one side has bright sunny daytime, the other side is dark and having nighttime!
Right now, on the other side of the world, people might be fast asleep in the middle of the night — while you are at school in the daytime!
How Long Is a Day?#
One complete rotation of the Earth takes exactly 24 hours. We split this into daytime and nighttime. In summer, when your part of the Earth is tilted toward the Sun, the days are long (lots of daylight, short nights). In winter, the days are short (less daylight, long nights).
A Simple Demonstration#
You can see how day and night work with a ball and a lamp. Hold the ball in front of the lamp. One side of the ball is lit up (day) and the other is dark (night). Slowly spin the ball — and you will see the lit side and dark side change, just like day turning into night and back again!
The Earth spinning is one of the most important movements in the universe for us — it gives us our days!
