Piet Mondrian and Bold Grids#

Have you ever seen a painting that looks like a grid of squares and rectangles filled with red, yellow, and blue? That is the style of an artist named Piet Mondrian (say it: Pete Mon-DREE-an)!

Who Was Mondrian?#

Piet Mondrian was born in the Netherlands (a country in Europe) in 1872. He loved art from a very young age. He started as a traditional painter — making realistic landscapes and flowers — but over time he changed his style completely.

Mondrian became interested in finding the most simple, basic forms of art. He asked himself: "What if I strip away all the complicated details? What is left?"

His answer: straight lines, right angles, and primary colors!

Mondrian's Famous Style#

In his most famous paintings, Mondrian used:

  • Thick black lines running horizontally (across) and vertically (up and down)
  • Rectangles and squares formed by those lines
  • Only red, yellow, and blue for color, plus white, gray, and black

His paintings look like a modern grid or a very organized puzzle. They feel calm, balanced, and neat.

Famous Works#

Some of his most famous paintings include "Composition with Red, Yellow, and Blue" and "Broadway Boogie Woogie." "Broadway Boogie Woogie" looks like a colorful city map with lots of little squares.

What Do You Notice?#

When you look at a Mondrian painting, ask yourself:

  • What shapes do you see?
  • What colors are used?
  • Dös the painting feel balanced or unbalanced?
  • Dös it remind you of anything — like a city, a checkerboard, or a window?

Try It Yourself!#

You can make your own Mondrian-style artwork:

  1. Use a ruler to draw a grid of rectangles on your paper
  2. Color some rectangles red, some yellow, some blue, and leave others white
  3. Go over the lines with a thick black marker

Now you have your very own Mondrian-inspired masterpiece!
