What Is Data and How Do We Collect It?#
Data is information that we collect and organize. When you count how many students like pizza, or survey your class about their favorite color, you are collecting data! Data helps us learn about the world, notice patterns, and make good decisions.
Why Do We Collect Data?#
- A school might count how many students walk, bike, or ride the bus to plan better transportation.
- A farmer might track how much rain falls each day to decide when to water crops.
- Scientists collect data to answer questions about animals, plants, and the environment.
- You might collect data to find out your class's favorite book or animal!
Ways to Collect Data#
Counting: Count how many of each kind there are. For example, count how many red, blue, and yellow cars pass by in 10 minutes.
Surveys: Ask a group of people a question and record their answers. For example: "What is your favorite subject — math, reading, science, or art?"
Tallying: Use tally marks to count quickly. Each mark = 1. Every 5th mark is a diagonal slash through the first 4 (|||/). This makes it easy to count by 5s.
Organizing Data#
After collecting data, we organize it in a tally chart or table. This makes it easy to read and compare.
| Favorite Color | Tally | Total |
|---|---|---|
| Red | ||
| Blue | ||
| Yellow | ||
| Green |
Once the data is organized, we can make a graph to show it visually. Graphs make data much easier to compare and understand at a glance!
