What Is a Simple Machine?#

Have you ever used a ramp to roll your bike up a hill? Or opened a door with a handle? If you have, you already know about simple machines!

A simple machine is a tool that helps us do work more easily. Work means pushing or pulling something to make it move. Simple machines help us by changing the size or direction of the force we use.

There are six types of simple machines:

  1. Lever — a bar that rests on a point
  2. Wheel and axle — a wheel attached to a rod
  3. Pulley — a rope looped over a wheel
  4. Inclined plane — a flat, slanted surface
  5. Wedge — two inclined planes joined together
  6. Screw — an inclined plane wrapped in a spiral

Every day, you use simple machines and may not even notice! The spoon you use to eat is a lever. The doorknob you turn is a wheel and axle. The ramp at the store is an inclined plane.

Simple machines do not need electricity or motors. They are powered by your push or pull. Because of that, they work anywhere — even in places without power.

Think about trying to lift a heavy box. It is very hard! But if you slide it up a ramp instead of lifting it straight up, it is much easier. That is because the ramp — an inclined plane — spreads the work over a longer distance. You use less force, but you move over a longer path.

Simple machines have been used for thousands of years. Long ago, people used levers and ramps to build giant stone pyramids. Sailors used pulleys to raise big sails on ships. Today, we still use the same simple machines in cars, buildings, scissors, and toys.

Learning about simple machines helps you understand how the world works. Once you know what to look for, you will spot simple machines everywhere you go!
