Learning the Months of the Year in German!#

Every year has twelve months, and each one has a special name in German too! The German word for month is der Monat (dare mo-naht), and the months together are called die Monate (dee mo-nah-teh).

Here is some wonderful news: the German month names look very similar to the English month names! This is because both languages share Latin roots. Once you learn them, you will be amazed at how familiar they sound.

Did you notice how similar the German and English month names are? They are almost the same! The biggest differences are:

• März instead of March
• Mai instead of May
• Juni instead of June
• Juli instead of July

Even these are very close. German months use a capital letter at the start, just like in English. This is important to remember when writing!

What Month Is It Now?#

The question "What month is it?" in German is:

"Welcher Monat ist es?" (vel-kher mo-naht ist es) — What month is it?

And the answer:

"Es ist Januar." — It is January. "Wir sind im März." (veer zint im merts) — We are in March.

Talking About Birthdays#

One of the most fun ways to use months is to talk about birthdays! In German:

"Mein Geburtstag ist im ___!" (mine geh-borts-tahk ist im) — My birthday is in ___!

For example:

• "Mein Geburtstag ist im März." — My birthday is in March.
• "Mein Geburtstag ist im Oktober." — My birthday is in October.
