Water Safety Rules#
Water activities like swimming are wonderful fun, but water can also be dangerous if you are not careful. That is why water safety is the very first thing you learn in any swimming or water activity program.
Knowing water safety rules could save your life or the life of someone else someday. Please take these rules seriously!
Rule 1: Never Swim Alone#
Always swim with a buddy and with an adult present. If you get into trouble in the water — if you swallow water, cramp up, or panic — you need someone there to help. Never go near water alone.
Rule 2: Swim Only Where a Lifeguard Is Present#
At public pools and beaches, always swim in the area where a lifeguard can see you. Lifeguards are trained to help in emergencies. If there is no lifeguard, do not swim.
Rule 3: No Running Near Water#
Pool decks and other surfaces near water are slippery. Running near water is dangerous because you can slip and fall into the water — or onto a hard surface. Always WALK near water.
Rule 4: Follow Pool Rules#
Every pool has specific rules posted. These usually include:
- No diving in shallow water (this can cause serious spinal injuries)
- No pushing others into the water
- Stay in your designated area
- No rough play that could injure others
Rule 5: Stay Within Your Ability#
Only swim in water that matches your swimming ability. If you are still learning to swim, stay in shallow water where you can stand up. Do not let peer pressure take you into water that is too deep or too dangerous for your skill level.
Rule 6: Life Jackets for Open Water#
In open water (lakes, rivers, oceans), always wear a properly fitted life jacket unless you are a strong, experienced swimmer in a safe, supervised area.
What to Do in an Emergency#
If you see someone struggling in the water:
- Shout for help and call to a lifeguard or adult immediately.
- Throw something that floats to the person (a ring buoy, a noodle, a cooler).
- Do NOT jump in to save them unless you are a trained rescuer — you could both get into trouble.
- Call emergency services if needed.
