What Is a Map?#

Have you ever looked down from an airplane and seen tiny roads, squares of fields, and miniature houses below? Maps show us what places look like from up above — from a bird's-eye view!

A map is a flat drawing that shows a place from above. Maps help us:

• Find where we are
• Plan how to get somewhere
• Learn about far-away places
• Understand the shape and size of countries and continents

Types of Maps#

There are many types of maps for different purposes:

• Street maps — show roads and streets in a city or neighborhood
• Political maps — show country and state boundaries
• Physical maps — show mountains, rivers, and natural landforms
• Weather maps — show temperature and rainfall
• Treasure maps — fictional maps showing where treasure is hidden (in stories!)

How Maps Are Different from Photographs#

A photograph shows what a place actually looks like. A map represents the place using simple symbols, colors, and lines. Maps:

• Are usually smaller than the real place (they are scaled down)
• Use symbols (pictures or shapes) to stand for real things
• Have a key to explain the symbols
• May show only certain types of information

What Dös 'Scale' Mean?#

A map scale tells you how distances on the map compare to real distances. For example, 1 centimeter on the map might equal 1 kilometer in real life. Scale lets us show a huge country on a small piece of paper!

Why Maps Are Useful#

Before GPS and smartphones, people used paper maps to navigate. Even today, understanding maps is an important skill. Maps help travelers, pilots, soldiers, sailors, and scientists understand the world around them. Let's learn how to read a map!
