Life Long Ago vs. Life Today#

Have you ever seen an old photo of your grandparents or great-grandparents when they were young? Things look very different! The clothes, the cars, and even the hairstyles are not the same as today.

Over time, communities, tools, and ways of doing things change. This change is called history. Historians (people who study history) compare the past to the present to understand how and why things changed.

What Is the Difference Between Then and Now?#

• Then means in the past — maybe 50, 100, or even 200 years ago.
• Now means the present — today.

How Do We Learn About the Past?#

Historians use different sources to learn what life was like long ago:

• Photographs — old photos show us what people, places, and objects looked like
• Paintings and drawings — from before photography was invented
• Written records — diaries, letters, and books from the past
• Artifacts — objects left behind from the past, like tools, clothing, and coins
• Buildings and monuments — old structures still standing today
• Oral history — stories passed down through generations

Change Happens Slowly#
