Your Body Is a Drum!#
Did you know that you carry a musical instrument with you wherever you go? Your own body can make music! Clapping your hands, stomping your feet, patting your knees, and snapping your fingers are all ways to make rhythmic sounds. This is called body percussion!
"Percussion" means instruments that you hit or strike to make a sound. Drums, maracas, and tambourines are all percussion instruments. But your body can be a percussion instrument too!
Why Use Body Percussion?#
Body percussion is a wonderful way to learn about rhythm because:
- You always have it with you — no instrument needed!
- It connects music to movement and your whole body.
- It helps you FEEL the beat, not just hear it.
- It is really fun!
Famous music teacher Carl Orff built an entire way of teaching music around body percussion and movement. He believed children learn music best when they use their whole bodies.
Types of Body Percussion#
Here are four main types of body percussion:
Clapping: Slap both palms together. Makes a sharp, medium-pitched sound.
Patting (Patsch): Pat both hands on your thighs (the tops of your legs). Makes a softer, lower sound.
Stomping: Stamp one foot on the floor. Makes a deep, loud sound.
Snapping: Snap your fingers (middle finger against thumb). Makes a light, crisp sound.
Each type makes a different kind of sound — high or low, loud or soft. Combining them creates interesting textures of rhythm!
Levels of Sound#
Musicians often talk about HIGH, MEDIUM, and LOW sounds. Body percussion has levels too:
- High: Snapping (high up, delicate sound)
- Medium: Clapping (in the middle, clear sound)
- Low: Patting or stomping (down low, deep sound)
Using different levels makes your body percussion music more interesting and musical!
