Music Is Universal#
Imagine flying around the world in a magical airplane. You land in a village in Ghana, Africa. You hear drumming and singing. You fly to a small town in Japan. You hear gentle strings and flutes. You fly to a city in Brazil. You hear samba rhythms and lively singing. You fly to the mountains of Peru. You hear pan flutes echoing through the valleys.
Every place you land, people are making music! This is because music is universal — it is part of every human culture on Earth. No matter where people live, they make music to celebrate, to mourn, to worship, to work, to tell stories, and to connect with each other.
Why Is Music Universal?#
Scientists and researchers have studied music across cultures and found some amazing things:
- Every known human culture, including the most isolated ones ever found, had music.
- Even babies respond to music before they can speak or walk.
- Certain musical features — like lullabies having a gentle, falling melody — appear in cultures that have never been in contact with each other.
- Music activates many different parts of the brain, suggesting it has deep roots in human biology.
Music seems to be built into us as human beings!
Different but Connected#
Musical traditions around the world are wonderfully diverse. Different cultures use:
- Different instruments and ways of making sound
- Different scales (some use more notes than the Western 12-note scale)
- Different rhythmic structures
- Different purposes for music
But they are also connected. All music involves organizing sounds in time. All music creates patterns. All music communicates something — a feeling, a story, or an idea.
Respecting Musical Diversity#
When you listen to music from cultures different from your own, approach it with curiosity and respect. Try to understand it on its own terms before comparing it to music you already know. What might sound unusual at first often reveals its own beauty when you listen more deeply.
