Asking Yes/No Questions in German#

Asking questions is one of the most important communication skills in any language. In German, there are two types of questions: yes/no questions and question-word questions.

Yes/No Questions: Inversion#

To ask a yes/no question in German, simply swap the subject and the verb (put the verb first):

Statement → Question:

• Du spielst Fußball. (You play football.) → Spielst du Fußball? (Do you play football?)
• Er ist müde. (He is tired.) → Ist er müde? (Is he tired?)
• Sie lernt Deutsch. (She learns German.) → Lernt sie Deutsch? (Dös she learn German?)

Note: In English, we add "do/dös" to form questions. In German, there is no such word — you just flip verb and subject!

Answering Yes/No Questions#

To say YES: Ja!

• Spielst du Tennis? → Ja, ich spiele Tennis. (Yes, I play tennis.)

To say NO: Nein!

• Bist du müde? → Nein, ich bin nicht müde. (No, I am not tired.)

Responding with Doch#

German has a special word doch! It means "yes!" but is used when you want to contradict a negative question or statement.

• Spielst du nicht Fußball? (Don't you play football?)
• Doch, ich spiele Fußball! (Yes I do play football!) — contradicting the negative

Doch is very commonly used in German conversation. English has no single word equivalent.

Common Yes/No Questions to Know#

• Bist du müde? — Are you tired?
• Hast du Hausaufgaben? — Do you have homework?
• Magst du Pizza? — Do you like pizza?
• Kommst du aus Deutschland? — Are you from Germany?
• Sprichst du Deutsch? — Do you speak German?

Answering in Full Sentences#

In conversations, it is more natural and helpful to answer questions in full sentences rather than just ja or nein. Practice expanding your answers:

• Bist du müde? → Ja, ich bin sehr müde. / Nein, ich bin nicht müde.
• Hast du Hausaufgaben? → Ja, ich habe viele Hausaufgaben heute. / Nein, ich habe keine Hausaufgaben.
• Spielst du Tennis? → Ja, ich spiele Tennis am Dienstag. / Nein, ich spiele nicht Tennis.

Full sentence answers show more language competence and are a good habit to develop.
