Asking and Telling the Time in German#
Knowing how to ask and tell the time is essential for everyday life in German. In this unit, you will learn how to tell the time on the hour, half-hour, and quarter-hour.
Asking the Time#
There are two main ways to ask "What time is it?" in German:
- Wie spät ist es? — How late is it? (What time is it?)
- Wie viel Uhr ist es? — What o'clock is it? (What time is it?)
Both are perfectly natural. You will hear both in everyday German.
The Basic Answer: 'Es ist ... Uhr'#
The basic formula for telling the time on the hour is: Es ist [number] Uhr.

Special notes:
- Noon = Es ist Mittag. (12:00)
- Midnight = Es ist Mitternacht. (00:00)
- 'Uhr' is the German word for clock/o'clock — you always include it!
