The Recorder: An Introduction#

The recorder is one of the most ancient and accessible wind instruments in the world. Its clear, sweet sound and relatively simple technique make it a perfect first instrument for children!

What Is a Recorder?#

A recorder is a woodwind instrument — it makes sound when you blow air across a specially shaped opening (called the fipple or windway) at the mouthpiece. Unlike a flute (which you blow across), a recorder is blown directly into the mouthpiece.

History of the Recorder#

Recorders have been played for over 700 years! They were extremely popular in Europe during the Medieval and Renaissance periods (1300s-1600s), when they were played at courts and in churches. Major composers including Johann Sebastian Bach and Henry Purcell wrote beautiful music for the recorder.

In the 20th century, the recorder experienced a major revival as an educational instrument. Today, millions of students around the world learn music through the recorder.

Types of Recorders#

Recorders come in different sizes, each with a different range:

  • Sopranino — tiny, very high pitch
  • Soprano (Descant) — most common in schools, high pitch
  • Alto (Treble) — deeper, richer sound
  • Tenor — lower still
  • Bass — very low pitch

In school, you will most likely use the soprano recorder.

Parts of a Recorder#

  • Mouthpiece (head) — where you blow; contains the fipple/windway
  • Body (middle joint) — contains most of the finger holes
  • Foot joint — the bottom section with one or two additional holes

Taking Care of Your Recorder#

  • Clean it after every use (wipe inside and outside)
  • Never share mouthpieces with others
  • Store it safely in its case
  • Never force stuck joints — twist gently to separate
