The Human Voice: Your Natural Instrument#

You were born with a musical instrument that you carry everywhere — your voice! The human voice is one of the most expressive and beautiful instruments in the world, and learning to use it well is a skill that enriches your life forever.

How the Voice Works#

When you sing:

  1. You breathe in — your lungs fill with air
  2. You push air through your larynx (voice box) in your throat
  3. The vocal cords vibrate — two small folds of tissue vibrate as air passes between them
  4. The vibrations create sound — higher pitch = faster vibration; lower pitch = slower vibration
  5. Your mouth, nose, and chest act as resonators — they amplify and color the sound

Children's Voices#

Children's voices are naturally high and light. Before puberty, boys and girls have similar vocal ranges. After puberty, boys' voices change ("break") and become much lower.

The typical child (ages 8-9) singing range: approximately C4 to C5 (middle C to high C), though many children can go higher or lower.

Registers: Chest Voice and Head Voice#

Chest voice: Lower notes felt as vibration in the chest — heavier, fuller sound Head voice: Higher notes felt as vibration in the head — lighter, floating sound

Singing higher notes in head voice rather than pushing the chest voice too high produces a more beautiful, sustainable tone. Good singing teachers help students find their head voice.

Taking Care of Your Voice#

Your voice is delicate!

  • Stay hydrated — drink plenty of water
  • Avoid shouting and excessive talking at full volume
  • Rest your voice when you are sick or it feels strained
  • Warm up before singing — never jump straight into difficult high notes
  • Avoid singing in cold, dry air if possible
