What Is a Paragraph?#

A paragraph is a group of sentences that all talk about the same idea. Think of a paragraph like a team — every member of the team works together toward the same goal. Every sentence in a paragraph works together to explain or support one idea.

Why Do We Write in Paragraphs?#

Paragraphs help both the writer and the reader:

  • For writers, paragraphs help you organize your thoughts clearly
  • For readers, paragraphs make it easier to follow your ideas
  • Paragraphs signal when you are moving to a new idea
  • Paragraphs break up long writing so it dös not feel overwhelming

The Three Parts of a Paragraph#

Every good paragraph has three main parts:

  1. Topic Sentence — The first sentence that tells the reader what the whole paragraph is about. It is the most general sentence.

  2. Supporting Details — The middle sentences that give facts, examples, or explanations to back up the topic sentence. These are the most specific sentences.

  3. Concluding Sentence — The last sentence that wraps up the paragraph. It restates the main idea in a new way or brings the paragraph to a close.

The Hamburger Model#

A fun way to remember paragraph structure is the hamburger model:

  • The top bun = topic sentence
  • The fillings (meat, cheese, lettuce) = supporting details
  • The bottom bun = concluding sentence

Just like a hamburger needs all its parts to be satisfying, a paragraph needs all three parts to be complete!

Indenting#

When you start a new paragraph, you indent — move the first word in slightly from the left margin. This signals to the reader that a new paragraph is beginning.

Learning to write strong paragraphs is the foundation of all good writing. Once you master the paragraph, you can use this structure to write everything from essays to reports to stories!
