The Four Types of Sentences#

Did you know there are four different types of sentences in English? Each type has a different purpose and ends with a different punctuation mark. Knowing all four sentence types makes your writing more varied and interesting.

1. Declarative Sentences#

A declarative sentence makes a statement or shares information. It ends with a period (.).

  • The sun rises in the east.
  • My favorite color is blue.
  • Dogs are loyal animals.

Declarative sentences are the most common type. Most of the sentences in a book or report are declarative.

2. Interrogative Sentences#

An interrogative sentence asks a question. It ends with a question mark (?).

  • What is your name?
  • Where did you put my book?
  • Have you ever seen a shooting star?

Interrogative sentences often begin with question words: who, what, where, when, why, how.

3. Exclamatory Sentences#

An exclamatory sentence expresses strong emotion — excitement, surprise, joy, or fear. It ends with an exclamation mark (!).

  • I can't believe we won the game!
  • Watch out for the ice!
  • That was the most amazing show I have ever seen!

Use exclamation marks sparingly — if every sentence ends with !, the excitement loses its effect.

4. Imperative Sentences#

An imperative sentence gives a command or makes a request. It often ends with a period, but can end with an exclamation mark if the command is urgent.

  • Please sit down.
  • Hand in your homework.
  • Stop right there!

Imperative sentences often have a hidden subject — the word you is understood even though it is not written.

Mixing Sentence Types#

Using all four sentence types in your writing makes it much more engaging. A paragraph that uses only declarative sentences can sound flat and boring. Mixing in a question, an exclamation, or a command adds variety and life to your writing!
