What Makes a Community Problem?#

Every community faces challenges. Some problems are small — a broken swing at the playground. Others are large — not enough affordable housing. Understanding how to identify and address community problems is a key civic skill.

What Is a Community Problem?#

A community problem is any issue that affects the quality of life for people in a community. It might affect a few people or the entire town.

Examples of community problems:

  • Litter and pollution in parks or streets
  • Not enough crosswalks or safe paths to school
  • A playground that needs repair or upgrade
  • Bullying at school
  • Not enough food for families in need (food insecurity)
  • Traffic congestion on local roads
  • An abandoned building that is unsafe
  • Stray animals with no shelter

How to Identify a Problem#

Good problem-solvers ask:

  1. What is happening? Describe the situation clearly
  2. Who is affected? Which people or groups dös this impact?
  3. How seriously? Is it a minor inconvenience or a serious danger?
  4. What causes it? Understanding causes helps find solutions
  5. What would be better? What would success look like?

Looking at Your Own Community#

Try observing your neighborhood or school with fresh eyes:

  • Is there litter that nobody cleans up?
  • Are there places that feel unsafe?
  • Are there residents who seem isolated or without help?
  • Are there resources (parks, libraries) that could be improved?

Noticing problems is the FIRST step toward solving them. Many great community improvements started with one person saying, "This dösn't seem right — what can we do?"
