Who Are Indigenous Peoples?#

Long before the nations and borders we see on maps today, different groups of people lived in every region of the world. These groups — who developed their cultures, languages, and ways of life in those places over thousands of years — are known as indigenous peoples.

Defining Indigenous Peoples#

Indigenous peoples (also called First Peoples, First Nations, Native peoples, or Aboriginal peoples) are the original inhabitants of a land who developed distinct cultures there before other peoples arrived, often through colonization.

Key characteristics of indigenous peoples:

  • Deep historical connection to specific lands
  • Unique languages, traditions, and cultural practices
  • Distinct social, economic, and political systems
  • Often experienced colonization and displacement
  • Maintain traditions and cultures that have been passed down for generations

How Many Indigenous Peoples Are There?#

There are approximately 370–476 million indigenous people worldwide, belonging to over 5,000 distinct groups across more than 90 countries. They speak more than 4,000 of the world's 7,000 languages!

Indigenous Peoples Around the World#

  • Americas: Hundreds of First Nations and Native American tribes (Cherokee, Navajo, Lakota, Aztec, Maya, Inca, and many more)
  • Africa: Maasai (Kenya/Tanzania), San/Bushmen (Southern Africa), Tuareg (Sahara)
  • Asia/Pacific: Aboriginal Australians, Torres Strait Islanders, Maori (New Zealand), Ainu (Japan)
  • Arctic: Inuit, Yupik, and other Arctic peoples across Canada, Alaska, Greenland, Russia
  • Europe: Sami people of Scandinavia
