What Are Adaptations?#
Have you ever wondered why polar bears are white, why cacti have thick stems, or why ducks have webbed feet? The answer is adaptation!
An adaptation is a special feature or behavior that helps a living thing survive in its environment. Over a very long time — millions of years — organisms with helpful traits survived and had offspring. Organisms without those traits were less likely to survive. This process is called natural selection.
Two Types of Adaptations#
1. Structural Adaptations
Structural adaptations are physical features — parts of an organism's body that help it survive.
Examples:
- A duck's webbed feet help it swim efficiently
- A cactus's thick stem stores water in dry deserts
- A polar bear's thick fur and fat layer keeps it warm in Arctic cold
- A giraffe's long neck helps it reach leaves high in trees
- A chameleon's changing skin color helps it hide from predators
2. Behavioral Adaptations
Behavioral adaptations are actions that help an organism survive.
Examples:
- Migration — birds fly south in winter to find food
- Hibernation — bears sleep through cold winters when food is scarce
- Camouflage behaviors — stick insects stay very still to blend in with branches
- Nocturnal behavior — owls hunt at night to avoid competition
Adaptations Take a Long Time#
Adaptations do not happen in one organism's lifetime. They develop over thousands or millions of generations. Each generation that survives in an environment passes on its helpful traits to offspring.
Adaptations Are Not Always Perfect#
An adaptation that helps in one environment might not help in another. This is why organisms are specialized for specific environments — and why they struggle if their environment changes rapidly.
