What Is Printmaking?#
When you press a rubber stamp into ink and then onto paper, you have made a print! Printmaking is one of the oldest art forms in the world, and it has a special quality that painting and drawing do not: you can make multiple identical copies from one image.
Defining Printmaking#
Printmaking is the process of creating artwork by transferring ink (or paint) from a prepared surface called a matrix or plate onto paper, fabric, or another surface. The original image is created on the plate, and it can be printed many times.
Why Is Printmaking Special?#
- Reproducibility: One image can be printed dozens or even hundreds of times
- Unique marks: Each printing technique creates distinctive textures and marks impossible with brushes alone
- Mirror image: The printed image is the REVERSE of the image on the plate
- History: Before photography, printmaking was the only way to reproduce images for books, newspapers, and maps
Types of Printmaking#
There are four main categories:
1. Relief Printing — the design is RAISED; ink is applied to the raised surface only (like a rubber stamp) Examples: woodblock printing, linocut, foam printing
2. Intaglio Printing — the design is RECESSED (cut into the surface); ink fills the grooves Examples: etching, engraving, drypoint
3. Screen Printing (Stencil) — ink passes THROUGH a mesh screen where the design allows it Examples: silk-screen printing (used for T-shirts!), stencil printing
4. Planographic Printing — the design is on a FLAT surface, working with the fact that oil and water don't mix Examples: lithography, digital printing
For Grade 3: Relief Printmaking#
We will focus on relief printmaking — the simplest and most accessible type for making art at school. This includes foam prints, vegetable prints, and simple carved designs.
