What Is Three-Dimensional Art?#
When you draw a picture on paper, you create a two-dimensional (2D) image — it has height and width, but no real depth. But sculpture and three-dimensional art exist in the real world with height, width, AND depth. You can walk around them and see different views!
2D vs. 3D Art#
Two-dimensional (2D) art:
- Painting, drawing, photography, printmaking
- Exists on a flat surface
- Creates the ILLUSION of depth using perspective
- Only one viewing angle
Three-dimensional (3D) art:
- Sculpture, pottery, installation art
- Has actual depth — takes up real space
- Can be viewed from many angles
- You can sometimes touch and walk around it
Key Vocabulary for 3D Art#
- Form: A three-dimensional shape — a cube, sphere, cylinder, pyramid, or organic shape
- Mass: The amount of solid material in an artwork; how heavy or solid it feels visually
- Volume: The amount of space an artwork encloses or occupies
- Space: The area around, between, or within parts of an artwork
- Positive space — the space the sculpture itself occupies
- Negative space — the empty space around and through the sculpture
- Texture: The surface quality — rough, smooth, bumpy, grainy
Why Negative Space Matters#
In 3D art, negative space is as important as positive space. The holes and openings in a sculpture create rhythm, balance, and visual interest. Henry Moore, a famous British sculptor, was known for large abstract sculptures with dramatic holes and voids.
Types of 3D Art#
- Freestanding sculpture — can be viewed from all sides
- Relief sculpture — attached to a background; projects outward (like coins)
- Installation — large-scale artwork that fills a room or outdoor space
- Pottery / Ceramics — functional or decorative 3D art made from clay
