Shading and Value

Drawing and Visual Design

Students create a range of values from light to dark using pencil and other drawing media. They apply shading techniques such as hatching and blending to give three-dimensional form to drawn objects.

Understanding Value in Art#

In art, value refers to the lightness or darkness of a color or tone. Value is one of the fundamental elements of art — along with line, shape, form, space, texture, and color.

Why Value Matters#

Value is what allows artists to create the illusion of three-dimensional form on a flat surface. When light shines on an object, some surfaces face toward the light (and appear lighter) while others turn away (and appear darker). By recreating these light and shadow patterns with carefully controlled values, an artist makes a flat drawing look solid and three-dimensional.

Compare these two circles:

  • A circle filled with a flat, even gray looks like a disk — flat and two-dimensional
  • A circle with carefully graduated shading from light to dark looks like a sphere — solid and three-dimensional

The difference is entirely due to value.

The Value Scale#

A value scale is a gradual transition from white to black through a series of grays. Professional artists often create a 9-step or 11-step value scale as a reference:

White → Light gray → Medium gray → Dark gray → Black

Practice: Use a pencil to create your own value scale by pressing lightly for light values and pressing harder for dark values.

Light and Shadow Vocabulary#

  • Highlight: The lightest spot — where the light source hits directly
  • Midtone: Medium value — partially lit surfaces
  • Shadow: Darker areas on the object itself (core shadow)
  • Reflected light: Slight lightening at the edge of the shadow from light bouncing off nearby surfaces
  • Cast shadow: The shadow the object throws onto nearby surfaces
