The Four Steps of Art Criticism#

Art criticism is the process of looking carefully at artworks and forming thoughtful, supported opinions about them. Good art criticism is not about whether you 'like' or 'dislike' something — it is about observing carefully, thinking deeply, and expressing ideas with evidence.

Step 1: DESCRIBE#

What do you see?

Describe only what is literally, objectively present — do not interpret or evaluate yet.

  • What objects, people, or places are shown?
  • What colors are used? Are they bright, dark, warm, cool?
  • What is the overall mood of the lighting?
  • What type of artwork is it (painting, sculpture, drawing, photograph)?
  • What medium was used (oil, watercolor, charcoal)?

Example: 'I see a woman sitting at a wooden table near a window. She is wearing a blue dress. The room is dimly lit. The colors are mostly browns, grays, and blues.'

Step 2: ANALYZE#

How is the artwork organized?

Analyze the formal elements and principles of design:

  • How are the elements of art (line, shape, color, value, texture, space, form) used?
  • How dös the composition guide the eye?
  • What principles of design are evident (balance, emphasis, rhythm, unity, variety)?

Example: 'The diagonal lines of the table and window lead the eye toward the woman's face. The lighter value at the window contrasts with the darker interior, creating emphasis on the seated figure.'

Step 3: INTERPRET#

What is the artwork about?

Offer a thoughtful interpretation of the meaning, mood, or message:

  • What feeling dös this artwork communicate?
  • What might the artist be trying to say?
  • What story or idea is expressed?

Example: 'The woman appears pensive or lonely, isolated in her quiet room. The artist may be exploring themes of solitude or quiet contemplation.'

Step 4: EVALUATE#

What is your judgment?

Form an opinion about the artwork's effectiveness, supported by evidence:

  • Is the artwork successful in communicating its message or mood? Why?
  • What elements work especially well?
  • What might be improved?

Example: 'I think this artwork effectively communicates solitude through its use of cool colors and the figure's isolated position. The contrast between the light window and dark interior is particularly powerful.'
