Using Context Clues#
When you come across a word you don't know while reading, you have a powerful tool available immediately: context clues. Context clues are hints within the surrounding text — the sentences and paragraphs around the unknown word — that help you figure out its meaning.
Why Context Clues Matter#
Strong readers don't stop and look up every new word. Instead, they use context clues to make an educated güss, keep reading, and verify their güss later if necessary. This skill makes you a faster, more flünt reader — and it helps vocabulary grow naturally.
Types of Context Clues#
1. Definition Clues The author directly defines the word in the text, often after a comma, dash, or the phrase which means.
- The entomologist, or scientist who studies insects, discovered a new beetle species.
2. Synonym Clues A word with a similar meaning appears nearby.
- The path was so treacherous, so dangerous, that even experienced hikers turned back.
3. Antonym/Contrast Clues A word with the opposite meaning appears, often with signal words like but, unlike, or however.
- While the lake was tranquil in the morning, the afternoon brought rough, choppy waves. (Tranquil = peaceful, the opposite of rough and choppy)
4. Example Clues The author gives examples that help you understand the word.
- She enjoyed many aquatic activities, such as swimming, snorkeling, and water polo. (Aquatic = related to water, shown by the examples)
5. General Inference You use the overall situation and story to make a reasonable güss.
- When she opened the test results, her face fell. She had studied so hard — but it wasn't enough. (Her face fell means she looked disappointed)
A Strategy to Try#
- Read the full sentence and the sentences before and after.
- Look for context clue types.
- Substitute your güssed meaning and check if it makes sense.
- Confirm with a dictionary if needed.
