Physical Geography: Landforms and Water#
Geography is the study of Earth's physical features and how people live within and interact with them. Physical geography focuses on natural features — the landforms, water bodies, and climate that make a region distinct.
Major Landform Types#
Mountains: High elevation, rocky terrain. Found in the Rocky Mountains (west), Appalachians (east), and Cascades (northwest). Mountains create barriers to movement, receive heavy snowfall, and often divide drainage systems.
Plains: Large areas of flat or gently rolling land. The Great Plains stretch through the central US. Plains have fertile soil and are excellent for farming and settlement.
Plateaus: Elevated, relatively flat land. The Colorado Plateau in the southwest is famous for dramatic canyons carved by rivers.
Valleys: Low areas between hills or mountains, often formed by rivers. Many valleys have fertile soil and are ideal for farming.
Deserts: Dry regions with minimal precipitation. The Mojave, Sonoran, and Chihuahuan deserts are found in the American Southwest.
Coastal plains: Flat, low-lying land along coastlines. The Atlantic and Gulf Coastal Plains run along the eastern and southern US.
Major Bodies of Water#
Rivers: The Mississippi River is the largest river system in North America. Rivers provide transportation, water supply, and fertile floodplains.
Great Lakes: Five large freshwater lakes (Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie, Ontario) — the largest freshwater surface in the world by area.
Bays and estuaries: Semi-enclosed coastal waters where rivers meet the sea — Chesapeake Bay, San Francisco Bay.
Oceans: The US is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean (east), Pacific Ocean (west), Gulf of Mexico (south), and Arctic Ocean (north — Alaska).
