Introduction to the Perfekt: Die Vergangenheit#
In German, there are two main ways to talk about the past. In written German (books, newspapers, formal stories), the Präteritum (simple past) is commonly used. In spoken German and everyday writing, the Perfekt is much more common.
As a Grade 4 language learner, you will focus on the Perfekt because it is what German speakers use in everyday conversation.
The Structure of the Perfekt#
The Perfekt is formed with two parts:
[Auxiliary verb] + [Past Participle at the end]
The auxiliary verb (helping verb) is either haben (to have) or sein (to be), conjugated in the present tense. The past participle (Partizip II) is the main verb in a modified form, placed at the very end of the sentence.
Example:
- Ich habe Fußball gespielt. — I played soccer. (literally: I have soccer played.)
- Er ist nach Hause gegangen. — He went home. (literally: He is home gone.)
Why Two Auxiliaries?#
Most verbs use haben, but verbs of movement and change of state use sein. This distinction is crucial to correct German Perfekt usage.
Verbs that use HABEN (most verbs):
- transitive verbs (verbs with a direct object)
- verbs of activity that do not involve movement
Verbs that use SEIN (movement and change):
- verbs of movement from A to B (gehen, fahren, laufen, fliegen)
- verbs of change of state (aufwachen = to wake up, einschlafen = to fall asleep)
- specific verbs: sein (to be), bleiben (to stay), werden (to become)
