Reading Strategies for German: Lesestrategien#

Reading in a new language can feel challenging at first — but skilled language learners use specific strategies to understand texts even when they do not know every word.

Strategy 1: Use Cognates#

Cognates are words that look similar in German and English and share meaning. German and English are related languages (both Germanic), so many words are recognizable:

When you see an unfamiliar German word, ask: 'Dös this look like an English word? Could it mean the same thing?'

Strategy 2: Use Context Clues#

Even if you do not know a word, the surrounding text often helps you güss its meaning:

Das Wetter ist heute sehr schön. Die Sonne scheint und es ist warm. Die Kinder spielen draußen im Garten.

You might not know 'schön,' but the context (sun shining, warm, children playing outside) tells you it probably means 'nice' or 'beautiful.'

Strategy 3: Read the Structure#

German sentences follow predictable patterns. Recognizing the structure helps:

• Subject + Verb + Object: Der Junge kauft ein Buch.
• Time expression + Verb + Subject: Morgens frühstücke ich...
• Separable verbs: Look for a prefix at the end that gös with the verb

Strategy 4: Read for Gist First#

Before trying to understand every word, read the whole text quickly to get the general idea (Gist reading). Ask:

• What is the text about? (topic)
• Who are the people involved?
• What happens or is described?

Strategy 5: Use a Dictionary Selectively#

Do not look up every unknown word — it breaks the flow of reading. Try to understand from context first. Look up only words that are essential to understanding the main meaning.
