Harmony and Chord Basics

Music Theory and Notation

Students are introduced to harmony as two or more pitches sounding simultaneously. They listen for consonance and dissonance, explore I, IV, and V chords through Orff instruments and ukulele or recorder, and add chord accompaniments to familiar songs.

What Is Harmony?#

Harmony is the sound created when two or more pitches (notes) are played or sung at the same time. While melody is the single-note tune you sing or hum, harmony is the richness underneath and around that tune — the musical fabric that gives a melody its color, depth, and emotional power.

Melody vs. Harmony#

Think of music like a painting:

  • Melody is the main subject — the figure you first notice
  • Harmony is the background — the colors and textures that make the subject come alive

Without harmony, a melody sounds simple and plain. With harmony, the same melody can sound joyful, sad, mysterious, or triumphant depending on which harmonies are chosen.

How Harmony Works#

When two notes sound together, the ear hears their relationship — how far apart they are in pitch and whether they blend smoothly or clash. This distance between notes is called an interval.

Close intervals (like thirds and sixths) tend to blend pleasantly — they sound smooth and agreeable together. These are described as consonant.

Wider or tighter intervals (like seconds or sevenths) tend to create tension — the notes seem to push against each other and ask to resolve. These are described as dissonant.

Listening for Harmony#

You can hear harmony everywhere in music:

  • A choir singing different parts at once
  • A piano with the left hand playing chords while the right plays the melody
  • A guitar strumming chords under a singer
  • A string quartet with four instruments playing interlocking parts

The Role of Harmony in Emotion#

Harmony is one of the most powerful tools composers use to create emotion:

  • Major harmonies tend to sound bright, happy, and confident
  • Minor harmonies tend to sound sad, mysterious, or serious
  • Dissonant harmonies create tension, suspense, and drama
  • Resolving from dissonance to consonance creates a sense of relief and satisfaction
