Vocal Production and Part Singing
Performance and Music History
Students develop healthy vocal technique including posture, breath support, and diction. They explore two-part singing through rounds and partner songs, and apply dynamics and phrasing to expressive performance.

The Singing Voice and Vocal Health#
Your voice is your most personal instrument — it is always with you and uniquely yours. Like any instrument, the voice requires proper care, warm-up, and technique to produce its best sound and remain healthy.
Understanding the Voice#
Sound is produced when air from the lungs passes through the vocal folds (sometimes called vocal cords) in the larynx (voice box). The vocal folds vibrate, creating sound waves that travel through the throat, mouth, and nasal passages — these cavities are called resonators and they amplify and shape the tone.
The pitch of your voice changes based on how tightly or loosely the vocal folds are held:
- Higher pitches: Vocal folds tighten, vibrating faster
- Lower pitches: Vocal folds relax, vibrating slower
Singing Posture#
Good singing posture allows maximum breath capacity and vocal freedom:
- Feet: Flat on the floor, shoulder-width apart (when standing)
- Spine: Tall and aligned — not rigid, but not slumped
- Shoulders: Down and relaxed — not raised toward the ears
- Head: Level — not tilted back or forward
- Jaw: Relaxed and open — tension in the jaw restricts the voice
- Chest: Open and lifted
Think of the spine as a stack of coins — each vertebra balanced on the next. Good alignment opens the airways and allows the breath to flow freely.
Vocal Health#
The voice is a delicate instrument that can be strained by misuse:
- Hydration: Drink plenty of water — vocal folds need moisture to work properly
- Rest: If your voice feels tired, rest it — pushing through vocal fatigue causes damage
- No shouting: Shouting and screaming at high volume can injure vocal folds
- Warm up before singing: Jumping into full-volume singing without warming up is like running a sprint without stretching
- Avoid whispering: Whispering actually puts more strain on the voice than speaking softly
The Grade 4 Voice#
In Grade 4 (ages 9-10), students typically have treble voices — unchanged, childlike voices capable of clear, light, high tones. This is the ideal time to develop healthy vocal habits before the voice changes during adolescence.
