Counting to 100
Counting is one of the first and most important things we learn in math. You already know how to count to 10 — and now we are going to count all the way to 100!
Numbers 1 to 20#
Let's start at the beginning. Here are the numbers from 1 to 20:
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20
Numbers 11 through 19 have special names: eleven, twelve, thirteen, fourteen, fifteen, sixteen, seventeen, eighteen, nineteen. After nineteen, we say twenty!
Counting By Tens#
After 20, the numbers follow a pattern. Each group of ten has a special name:
- 20 (twenty)
- 30 (thirty)
- 40 (forty)
- 50 (fifty)
- 60 (sixty)
- 70 (seventy)
- 80 (eighty)
- 90 (ninety)
- 100 (one hundred)
After twenty, the pattern is easy. After the tens number, just count on: twenty-one, twenty-two, twenty-three... all the way to twenty-nine. Then comes thirty!
Counting Forward From Any Number#
You do not always have to start counting at 1. You can start from any number and count forward!
- Start at 35 and count: 35, 36, 37, 38, 39, 40...
- Start at 68 and count: 68, 69, 70, 71, 72...
- Start at 94 and count: 94, 95, 96, 97, 98, 99, 100!
Practice starting at different numbers and counting forward. This is a great math skill!
Reading and Writing Numbers#
When you see the number 47, you say "forty-seven." When you hear "sixty-three," you write 63.
Practice writing numbers from 1 to 100. You can use a hundreds chart — a grid with all 100 numbers arranged in rows of 10. It is a great tool for seeing how numbers are organized!
Counting is the foundation of all of math. The better you know your numbers, the easier everything else will be!
