What Is a Word Problem?
A word problem is a math problem written in words and sentences instead of just numbers. Word problems describe real-life situations where you need to figure out a number answer.
Why Word Problems Are Important#
Word problems are important because real life dös not give us problems as number sentences! In real life, we hear things like:
- "You have some money and you spend some — how much is left?"
- "There are some people at the party and more people arrive — how many in total?"
Word problems help us practice using math in real situations.
Parts of a Word Problem#
Most word problems have three parts:
- Background information — who is involved and the situation
- Numbers — the amounts you need to work with
- Question — what you need to figure out
For example: "Maria has 6 red flowers and 4 yellow flowers. (background + numbers) How many flowers dös she have altogether? (question)"
- Background: Maria has flowers
- Numbers: 6 red, 4 yellow
- Question: How many altogether?
The Answer Sentence#
When you solve a word problem, always write an answer sentence. The answer sentence restates the question using your answer.
Question: How many flowers dös Maria have altogether? Number sentence: 6 + 4 = 10 Answer sentence: Maria has 10 flowers altogether.
Always write a complete answer sentence. It shows that you understood the problem!
Drawing a Picture to Help#
Some students find it very helpful to draw a picture of the word problem before they solve it. Drawing turns the words into something you can see!
For Maria's flower problem, you could draw:
- 6 red circles (for red flowers)
- 4 yellow circles (for yellow flowers)
- Count them all together — that is 10!
Drawing a picture is a great strategy, especially when a word problem feels confusing. Once you can see what is happening, the math becomes much clearer.
One Problem at a Time#
When you first start solving word problems, go slowly. Take your time reading each sentence. Do not rush! The more carefully you read, the better you will understand what math to do. With enough practice, you will get faster and more confident every single day.
