Comparing Lengths
Measurement is how we describe the size of things. Length is how long or tall something is from one end to the other. We can compare the lengths of two objects to see which is longer, shorter, or if they are the same.
Comparison Words for Length#
When comparing lengths, we use special words:
- Longer / Longest — this object stretches further
- Shorter / Shortest — this object is smaller in length
- Taller / Tallest — used for things that stand up (like people or buildings)
- Shorter / Shortest — for things that do not stand as tall
- The same length — when two objects measure the same
How to Compare Lengths#
To compare the length of two objects, you need to line them up at one end. This is very important! If you do not line them up at the same starting point, you cannot compare them fairly.
For example:
- Line up a pencil and a crayon at the left end.
- Look at the right end.
- Whichever one sticks out further to the right is longer!
Examples of Comparisons#
- A bus is longer than a car.
- A cat is shorter than a horse.
- A giraffe is taller than a dog.
- A mouse is shorter than a rabbit.
Ordering by Length#
We can also put more than two objects in order by length:
Imagine three pencils:
- The red pencil is the longest.
- The blue pencil is in the middle.
- The yellow pencil is the shortest.
Order from shortest to longest: yellow, blue, red.
Length in Real Life#
We compare lengths and heights all the time:
- Is the couch longer than the table?
- Is Dad taller than Mom?
- Is your shö the same size as your friend's shö?
Measuring and comparing helps us make decisions and describe the world around us accurately.
