Letters Are Everywhere!
Look around you! Letters are everywhere. They are on signs, books, boxes, and shirts. Letters are very special. They help us read and write words.
There are 26 letters in the alphabet. Every letter has a special shape. Some letters are tall, like the letter b and the letter d. Some letters hang down, like the letter p and the letter g. Some letters are short, like the letter a and the letter c.
Big Letters and Small Letters#
Every letter has two ways to look. One way is the uppercase letter (also called a capital letter). The other way is the lowercase letter (also called a small letter).
Here are some examples:
- Big A and small a
- Big B and small b
- Big C and small c
They look a little different, but they are the same letter!
The Alphabet Song#
Do you know the alphabet song? It helps you remember all 26 letters in order. The letters go like this:
A B C D E F G, H I J K L M N O P, Q R S T U V, W X Y and Z!
Singing the alphabet song is a great way to remember all the letters. You can sing it fast or slow. You can clap along too!
Why Letters Are Important#
Letters help us talk to each other on paper. When you put letters together, they make words. When you put words together, they make sentences. Sentences tell stories and share ideas.
Learning all the letters is the first big step to becoming a great reader and writer. You are already doing something amazing just by learning about letters today!
Practice looking for letters all around your home and classroom. How many letters can you find on a cereal box? How many letters are in your name? Every letter you learn brings you closer to reading whole books all by yourself!
