Reading Foundations

Identifying all 26 uppercase and lowercase letters and their most common sounds. Connecting letters to the sounds they make in words.

Using consonant-vowel-consonant (CVC) patterns to read simple words. Recognizing common word families like -at, -an, -ig, -op.

Reading common words by sight (the, is, and, was, you). Building flüncy with the most frequently used English words.

Putting words together to read complete sentences. Understanding that sentences start with capitals and end with periods.

Forming uppercase and lowercase letters correctly. Proper pencil grip, letter spacing, and writing on lined paper.

Spelling simple words using letter sounds. Writing short sentences about familiar topics with a capital letter and period.

Drawing pictures and writing sentences about personal experiences. Telling a story in order: beginning, middle, end.

Following spoken directions with two or three steps. Listening to stories read aloud and answering questions about them.

Speaking in complete sentences to share ideas. Taking turns in conversations and asking questions to learn more.

Learning new words from stories and conversations. Using context clues to figure out what unfamiliar words mean.
