What Is Phonics?
Phonics is a way of learning to read. When we use phonics, we match letters to their sounds. Then we blend those sounds together to read words. Phonics is like having a secret code for reading!
Blending Sounds Together#
When you see a word, you can look at each letter and say its sound. Then you push all the sounds together to say the whole word. This is called blending.
Let's try it with a simple word: cat
- The letter c says /k/
- The letter a says /a/
- The letter t says /t/
Now blend them together: /k/ + /a/ + /t/ = cat! Great job!
Let's try another one: dog
- d says /d/
- o says /o/
- g says /g/
Blend: /d/ + /o/ + /g/ = dog! You are a reading star!
CVC Words#
Many simple words follow a pattern: Consonant - Vowel - Consonant. We call these CVC words. They are great words to practice reading!
Here are some CVC words:
- hat (h-a-t)
- pig (p-i-g)
- cup (c-u-p)
- bed (b-e-d)
- log (l-o-g)
Each of these words has just three letters and three sounds. When you know your letter sounds, you can read all of these words!
Why Phonics Helps#
Phonics helps you read words you have never seen before. When you see a new word, you can sound it out! You do not have to memorize every single word. You can figure out new words all by yourself using phonics.
This is a superpower that will help you for the rest of your life. Keep practicing your letter sounds, and blending will get easier and faster every day!
