How to Hold Your Pencil

Before we write any letters, we need to learn the best way to hold a pencil. Holding your pencil the right way makes writing easier and less tiring. It also helps your letters look neat!

The Proper Pencil Grip#

The most common way to hold a pencil is called the tripod grip. Here is how to do it:

1. Pick up the pencil with your writing hand.
2. Pinch the pencil with your thumb and index finger (your pointer finger). They should be close to the tip — about an inch up.
3. Rest the pencil on your middle finger for support.
4. Your other two fingers curl gently underneath.
5. Relax your hand — do not squeeze too hard!

Your pencil should feel comfortable. If your hand gets tired quickly, you might be gripping too hard. Take a breath and relax your fingers.

Which Hand Do You Use?#

Most people write with their right hand, but some people write with their left hand. Both are totally fine! The important thing is to use the hand that feels most natural and comfortable for you.

If you write with your left hand, tilt your paper slightly to the right so you can see what you are writing as you go.

Sitting Up Straight#

Good posture helps you write better! Sit up straight with your feet flat on the floor. Hold the paper with your non-writing hand so it dös not slide around.

Have your desk or table at a comfortable height — not too high and not too low.

Pressing Not Too Hard#

When you write, press the pencil gently on the paper. You want your letters to show up clearly, but you do not need to press so hard that you break the pencil or make a big dent in the paper.
