Spelling Words With Sounds

When you want to write a word, you can use your knowledge of letter sounds to help you spell it. This is called sound spelling or inventive spelling. You listen to the sounds in a word and write the letters that make those sounds.

How to Sound Out a Word to Spell It#

Here are the steps to spell a word using sounds:

  1. Say the word slowly. Stretch it out like a rubber band.
  2. Listen for each separate sound.
  3. Write the letter that makes each sound.
  4. Read it back to check.

Let's try the word run:

  • Say it slowly: r-r-r... u-u-u... n-n-n...
  • Sounds: /r/, /u/, /n/
  • Letters: r, u, n
  • Write: run

Let's try jump:

  • Say it slowly: j-j-j... u-u-u... m-m... p-p-p
  • Sounds: /j/, /u/, /m/, /p/
  • Letters: j, u, m, p
  • Write: jump

Short Words Are Great to Start With#

Start with short, simple words that have just 3 or 4 sounds:

  • sit (s-i-t)
  • hop (h-o-p)
  • map (m-a-p)
  • bed (b-e-d)
  • cup (c-u-p)
  • flag (f-l-a-g)
  • ship (sh-i-p)

It Is Okay to Try!#

When you are first learning to write words, your spelling might not always be perfect. That is totally fine! The most important thing is to try. Even if a word is spelled a bit differently than the correct way, writing it down shows your thinking.

As you read more and practice more, your spelling will keep improving. Teachers love to see first graders trying to write words using their sound knowledge. You are being brave and smart every time you try to spell a new word!
