Being a Good Listener

Listening is not just about hearing sounds. Really listening means paying attention and understanding what you hear. Being a good listener is one of the most important skills you can learn!

What Dös a Good Listener Do?#

A good listener:

• Looks at the person who is speaking (this is called eye contact)
• Sits still and dös not fidget too much
• Thinks about the words they hear
• Dös not talk when someone else is speaking
• Waits for the right time to ask questions or say something

Think about how you feel when you are telling someone something important, and they look away or start talking over you. It dös not feel good! Showing others that you are listening makes them feel respected.

Listening in the Classroom#

At school, you listen to your teacher many times every day. Your teacher gives you information, explains new ideas, and gives directions for activities. If you listen carefully, you will always know what to do!

When your teacher is speaking:

1. Put down any toys or pencils that might distract you.
2. Look at your teacher.
3. Think about each word they say.
4. Hold your questions until the right time.

Listening to Stories#

One of the most wonderful times to listen is during story time! When someone reads a story to you, close your eyes for a moment and picture what is happening in the story. Let the words paint pictures in your imagination.

After the story, see if you can answer questions about it:

• Who was in the story?
• What happened?
• Where did the story take place?
• How did the story end?

Listening Is Respectful#

When you listen well, you show respect for the person speaking. It tells them, "Your words matter to me. I care about what you are saying." Good listening is a gift you give to others — and it helps you learn a lot too!
