Speaking in Complete Sentences
When we talk to others, we share our ideas by speaking in complete sentences. A complete sentence tells a whole thought — not just a word or two, but a full idea with a subject and an action.
Why Speak in Complete Sentences?#
Speaking in complete sentences helps people understand you better. If someone asks, "What did you do this morning?" and you say just "park," they might be confused. Did you go to the park? Did you see the park? But if you say, "I went to the park this morning," everyone knows exactly what you mean!
What Makes a Complete Sentence When Speaking?#
A spoken sentence has the same parts as a written sentence:
- Who or what it is about
- What happened or what is happening
Examples:
- "The sky is blue today."
- "I ate cereal for breakfast."
- "My friend likes to draw."
- "We played soccer at recess."
Turning Short Answers Into Sentences#
Practice expanding short answers into complete sentences.
Question: "What is your favorite animal?"
- Short answer: "Dog."
- Complete sentence: "My favorite animal is a dog."
Question: "Where did you go?"
- Short answer: "Library."
- Complete sentence: "I went to the library."
Practice Every Day#
Every time you answer a question at school or at home, practice giving a complete sentence answer. It might feel strange at first, but it quickly becomes a habit.
Your teacher may ask you to "answer in a complete sentence." This is great practice! Take a breath, think about your answer, then include who and what to make a full sentence.
Speaking clearly and in complete sentences is a skill that will help you your whole life — in school, with friends, and later when you grow up. Start practicing today!
