What Is Balance?#

Have you ever tried to stand on one foot? Or walk along a narrow line on the playground? That is using your balance!

Balance is the ability to keep your body steady and controlled so you do not fall over. It is one of the most important physical skills you can have.

Why Balance Matters#

Balance is used in almost every physical activity:

  • Walking and running (you balance on one foot with every step!)
  • Riding a bike
  • Climbing playground equipment
  • Sports like gymnastics, soccer, and basketball
  • Dance
  • Even just sitting up straight in your chair!

How Dös Balance Work?#

Your body uses three systems together to maintain balance:

1. Your eyes — Your eyes tell your brain where you are in space and what is around you. This is why closing your eyes makes balancing harder!

2. Your inner ear — Deep inside each ear is a tiny organ that senses movement and position. When you spin around and get dizzy, that is your inner ear getting confused.

3. Your muscles and joints — Tiny sensors in your muscles and joints constantly send information to your brain about your body's position. Your muscles then make tiny adjustments to keep you balanced.

All three systems work together at lightning speed to keep you upright!

Static vs. Dynamic Balance#

Static balance — holding still in one position, like standing on one foot.

Dynamic balance — maintaining balance while you are moving, like walking along a line or jumping and landing without falling.

Both types of balance are important, and you need to practice both!

The Center of Gravity#

Center of gravity is the point in your body where your weight is balanced. For most people, it is near your belly button area.

Lowering your center of gravity (bending your knees) makes it easier to balance. Standing up very tall and rigid makes balance harder. This is why surfers and skiers bend their knees!
