All About Tag Games#

Tag is one of the oldest and most universally loved games in the world! Children have been playing tag for thousands of years, in almost every culture on every continent. Why? Because it is simple, needs no equipment, and is incredibly fun!

What Is a Tag Game?#

A tag game is a chasing game where:

• One or more players are designated as "It" — the chaser(s)
• Other players try to avoid being tagged
• Being "tagged" usually means being touched by the person who is "It"
• When you are tagged, your role changes

What Tag Games Develop#

Speed — Running as fast as you can to get away from or catch someone!

Agility — Changing direction quickly, dodging, and maneuvering around people and obstacles. Agility means being able to change your movement quickly and efficiently.

Reaction time — Responding quickly when you see the tagger coming. Your brain has to signal your body very fast!

Cardiovascular fitness — Tag games get your heart pumping and your lungs working! Running around for several minutes is great aerobic exercise.

Decision-making — Should you run this way or that way? Should you stay near the boundary or the middle? Your brain is constantly making choices!

Rules That Make Tag Fair and Safe#

For tag to be fun for everyone, these rules are important:

1. Boundaries — everyone must stay within the designated play area
2. Safe tags — tagging means a gentle touch on the shoulder, arm, or back — NOT a hard hit
3. No contact — no grabbing, pushing, or tackling
4. Acknowledge tags — if you are tagged, be honest and admit it
5. Take responsibility as "It" — try your best to tag others fairly
6. Rotate "It" fairly — do not leave anyone as "It" for too long

Boundaries#

Boundaries are the edges of the playing area. They are usually marked with cones, lines on the floor, or natural features. Staying within boundaries makes the game fair and safe — and more exciting!
