What Is Composition?#
When you make a drawing or painting, you have to decide where to put things. Should the tree go on the left or in the middle? Should the house be big or small? Should the sky take up most of the page?
All of these decisions are part of something called composition. Composition means how you arrange things in your artwork. It is like arranging furniture in a room — you want everything to look good together and be in the right place!
Why Dös Composition Matter?#
Imagine you are telling a story with your picture. Where you place things helps tell that story. If you put a big, bright sun right in the middle of your picture, that is the first thing people will see. If you put a tiny bird in the corner, people might miss it!
Good composition helps the viewer's eyes move around the picture and find the important things. Bad composition can make a picture feel confusing or boring.
The Rule of Thirds#
Here is a helpful trick that many artists use. Imagine your paper divided into three rows and three columns, like a tic-tac-tö grid. This gives you nine sections and four points where the lines cross.
Artists call these crossing points the sweet spots of a picture. If you place important things near these sweet spots, your picture looks interesting and balanced!
For example, instead of putting a flower exactly in the center, try placing it a little to the side, near one of those sweet spots. It will look more natural and appealing.
Filling the Space#
Another important part of composition is thinking about how much space things take up. If everything in your picture is tiny and far away, the picture feels empty. If one big thing fills the whole page, the picture might feel cramped.
Try to mix big shapes and small shapes. Try to leave some space around your main subject so it can breathe. The empty areas around shapes are called negative space, and they are part of the composition too!
Now that you know what composition is, let's learn more about how to make your pictures look just right.
