Art
Grade 2 art exploring the color wheel, perspective basics, and mixed-media techniques
Color and Composition
The Color Wheel
Learning the primary colors (red, yellow, blue) and mixing them to create secondary colors (orange, green, violet). Arranging colors on the color wheel and understanding warm and cool color families.
Value, Tint, and Shade
Experimenting with adding white to create tints and black to create shades of a color. Using tints and shades to add contrast and interest to paintings and drawings.
Composition and Balance
Understanding how artists arrange elements in a picture to create balance and a focal point. Practicing placing subjects in the foreground, middle ground, and background to suggest depth.
Techniques and Media
Drawing with Perspective Basics
Using overlapping shapes and relative size to suggest near and far in a drawing. Drawing landscapes and cityscapes that include a horizon line and simple depth cues.
Mixed Media and Collage
Combining different materials such as paint, paper, fabric scraps, and natural objects to create collage artworks. Exploring texture by layering and tearing materials.
Pattern and Texture
Creating repeating patterns using stamps, stencils, and drawing. Examining real and implied texture in artworks and experimenting with techniques such as wax-resist and rubbing.
Art Appreciation and Response
Looking at Works of Art
Discussing artworks by various artists, describing what is seen using art vocabulary such as line, shape, color, and texture. Making connections between artworks and the cultural or historical context in which they were made.
Responding to and Evaluating Art
Sharing personal reactions to artworks and explaining preferences with reasons. Reflecting on one's own art-making process and identifying what went well and what to improve.
