Sharing Your Reactions to Art#
Have you ever walked past a painting and felt something — happy, surprised, calm, or even a little sad? That feeling is your personal response to the artwork. And that response is important!
When we respond to art, we share how it makes us feel and what we think about it. There are no wrong responses! Everyone can have a different reaction to the same artwork — and that is totally fine.
How to Talk About Your Reactions#
When you share your reaction to an artwork, try to go beyond just saying "I like it" or "I don't like it." Instead, try to explain WHY you feel that way. Here are some helpful sentence starters:
- "This painting makes me feel _______ because _______."
- "I like/dislike this artwork because _______."
- "This reminds me of _______ because _______."
- "I think the artist was trying to show _______ because _______."
- "The part I like most is _______ because _______."
Using these sentence starters helps you give reasons for your opinion. Opinions with reasons are much more interesting than opinions without reasons!
Personal Connections#
Art often connects to our personal experiences. A painting of a rainy day might remind you of a cozy afternoon at home. A sculpture of a dog might make you think of your own pet. A colorful abstract painting might remind you of music you love.
These personal connections make art come alive for YOU. Share them with your classmates — your connections might be completely different from theirs, and that leads to wonderful conversations!
Respecting Different Opinions#
It is very important to respect that other people might feel differently about the same artwork. One student might love a bright, bold, abstract painting. Another student might find it confusing or too busy.
Both opinions are valid! Art is personal. When a classmate shares their opinion, listen carefully and try to understand their point of view, even if you disagree.
Saying "That is an interesting way to look at it" or "I never thought of it that way" are great ways to show respect for different opinions.
