What Is a Syllable?#
A syllable is a word chunk that has one vowel sound. Every syllable has exactly one vowel sound. When you clap the beats of a word, each clap is one syllable.
Let us try it! Clap with me:
- cat — one clap — one syllable
- rab-bit — two claps — two syllables
- al-li-ga-tor — four claps — four syllables
Why Syllables Help You Read#
When you see a long word you do not know, it can feel scary. But if you break the word into syllables, you can read one small piece at a time. It is like eating a big sandwich — you do not try to put it all in your mouth at once. You take one bite at a time!
For example, the word sunshine looks long. But if you break it apart — sun + shine — you can read each piece easily. Then you put them back together: sunshine!
Finding Syllables#
Here are some easy tips for finding syllables in a word:
-
Count the vowels. Every syllable has one vowel sound. Count the vowel sounds and you will know how many syllables the word has.
-
Clap it out. Say the word out loud and clap every time you hear a vowel beat. Each clap is a syllable.
-
Look for familiar smaller words. Many words have smaller words hidden inside. The word cupcake has cup and cake.
Vowels to Remember#
Vowels are the letters A, E, I, O, U (and sometimes Y). Consonants are all the other letters. Syllables always contain vowels. This is why knowing your vowels helps you break words apart.
Practice finding syllables in the words around you — on cereal boxes, street signs, and in your books. Once you notice syllables everywhere, longer words will not seem so scary anymore!
